Sketchcrawl 17 was a real wake up for me. A call to action, and having been in a slower period at work, I've found myself with a little more time on my hands than usual; time I've used to reconnect with gesture drawing, one of my pure joys in life. I've been re-reading the Walt Stanchfield notes, poring over Milt Kahl and Marc Davis drawings of all types, attending the gesture classes at work taught by the great Tom Gately, as well as sketching on Bart, in cafes with friends and even in stores while my wife tries on clothes.
Here are some of the recent drawings, done tiny in a Rhodia No 16 book with ink.
Enjoy,
J
Great!!!! Love your lines :)
ReplyDeleteGood! You're shaking it out. I like them all.
ReplyDeleteCheers, James.
That's some great stuff James! The more you push them, the more I like them!
ReplyDeleteKeep going - Walt, Milt and Marc would be proud!
Duuuuude, these are so, so nice. Keep it up, love seeing new stuff from you.
ReplyDeleteR.
These are beautiful James!! It really shows that you had fun doing these!
ReplyDeleteI really, really like the third from the last - the woman pensive.
ReplyDeleteShe looks like you figured out what was going on in her head and picked your lines real carefully... awesome.
I heart, I heart. What's usually the first line you put to the paper?
ReplyDeleteFabulous sketches! I totally appreciate the little notes of advice in the upper corner of the 6th--thanks for sharing that, too.
ReplyDeleteloving this line work!
ReplyDeleteReally enjoy the color work as well!
Great Gestures!!
ReplyDeleteGreat sketches! I love em.
ReplyDeletelove your sketches- I enjoy how you caricature the features as well as the personality- I can't get enough of the Stanchfield notes either
ReplyDeleteBeautiful suite of sketches. Must work small like that. My sketchbook is too big and seems to 'draw' attention and scowls from aggressive paranoid maniacs; huge risk of altercations. With a little unobtrusive sketchbook you can draw people bigger and stronger than yourself instead of being stuck with safe little weaklings. I like the idea of the sketchbrawl too, and using strength of numbers to draw subjects. Maybe physical altercations are less of an issue in the US due to such a relatively large percentage of the public packing heat. Perhaps the subjects assume artists are armed.
ReplyDeleteI'm being slightly tongue in cheek...
Looking forward to more posts as I've been linked to you for yonks.
What a post!!! Thanks for the inspiration!:)
ReplyDeletereal friggin fresh J! Your quick sketches are fantastic.
